General Information
The Spanish settled Nicaragua as a colony in the 16th century. Nicaraguans declared independence from Spain in 1821 and became an independent republic in 1838. Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. It also has the largest freshwater body in Central America, Lago de Nicaragua.
